Welcome to IP3 - Leading the Development of the Global IT Profession

The quality of information and communication systems is critical to the well-being, wealth and welfare of the global community. Every facets of our personal and business lives is heavily dependent on computer based systems and therefore on the competence and professionalism of those who design, build, implement and manage those systems. The time has come to define and create the standards for a global IT profession.  There is a clear need for increased joint action and engagement of all key IT industry stakeholders, and for partnerships at the highest level.  In a spirit of dialogue and cooperation, the International Professional Practice Partnership (IP3) provides a global platform that will help shape and implement relevant policies to foster professionalism in IT worldwide.

Established in 2006, the IP3 is a global initiative that was adopted by the 90+ IFIP Member Societies at the IFIP General Assembly (GA). It consists of the leading professional IT associations across the globe that share a common vision to establish IT as a profession that is recognized and valued globally and has the same key strategic features that are common to most established professions.

Vision, Mission and Core Values

Why IP3?

As industries mature and their work becomes more central to the well-being and safety of society, we need to know that individuals working in that industry are not only qualified in their field but that they always have the best interests of society at heart and display integrity, responsibility and accountability in everything they do.

IT, like architecture, engineering and accounting, is now an integral part of every walk of life so IT systems must be built and run by professionals who understand business as well as IT to ensure that IT is exploited effectively and consistently.

The requirement for a more professional workforce has been further accelerated by the advent of legislation around corporate governance, such as Sarbanes Oxley, which requires organizations to certify the quality and integrity of their IT systems.

Historically one of the consequences of business disasters is a determination to improve professional standards in the industries responsibility. IP3 represents a global industry initiative to be pro-active in this regard.

The innate professionalism of individuals in itself is not enough today; organizations and governments need to know that individuals’ professionalism has been certified to globally recognized standards.

IT is one of a handful of professions where best practices and standards are not recognized or employed consistently across the globe. IT needs common standards of practice, knowledge and ethical boundaries. IT exists in a global world and we require professionals from different continents having a common language and understanding of roles, and standard means of measurement of capability and an assurance of quality.
